Summer Creatures of 2013, (Part I)

This baby black bear has one of the greatest exhibits at the zoo, full of natural habitat.  Thank goodness for that because he practically turned out to be a tree climber at birth.  Since he could move around autonomously, he has been climbing every tree in sight, sometimes to the tune of 100-150 feet high up in the air.  As you can imagine, the guests love it, particularly the wee ones, and the keepers close their eyes and pray that he will hang on.  Good for him acting like a natural wild bear! (He also happened to be my first subject with a new fancy lens on this sunny Portland day.)

This is one of his adult role models; I guess he needs to learn how to navel gaze at some point.

You're seeing Gunther, a 50 year old white cheeked gibbon (one of the strongest personalities among all the animals at the zoo) checking out a little girl behind the glass.  The roles were swapped for a moment.  Gunther was very particular about who he allowed to care for him.  If you weren't the right person, he would pitch a fit; otherwise, he was the sweetest.  Gunther passed away this week.  RIP, Gunther.
My friends, the goats.  They are so great.

Isn't she one of the most beautiful creatures you've ever seen?
